901 viewsThe 1953 George Pal sci-fi film The War of the Worlds is still considered one of the classic destruction-of-the-world-by-aliens movies. In its day, the special effects were considered stupendous, and you can still get a chill from it today.
Towards the end of the film, as the city of Los Angeles becomes a blazing inferno of destruction, traumatized Angelenos seek shelter in the churches of the city, and it is here that St. Brendan Church is featured.
Many of the interior features of the church are still recognizable today, but others are very different, and you can get a good idea of what our church building looked like in the 1950s by carefully watching these scenes.
Plot background: Scientists discover strange rocks that have fallen from the sky. They turn out to be Martian spaceships, and soon they are mobilized, approaching the world's major cities with destructive intent. The military forces of the world are powerless against them.
