A prospective student MUST have:
Completed Application

4. Previous report cards or progress reports
5. Testing (as assigned at St. Brendan upon receipt of completed application)
AGE:  Children applying for Kindergarten must be 5 years old by September 1st.
Children applying for 1st grade must be 6 years old by September 1st.
Children applying for 2nd grade must be 7 years old by September 1st.
ADMISSION:  Students are admitted into St. Brendan School on the basis of available room and according to the following parent and student requirements:

A. Parental support of the religious instruction by regular and active participation in parish and religious practice and worship including, but not limited to :
1) Weekly attendance at Mass
2) Support of the sacramental programs (Reconciliation and Eucharist)
3) Active participation in parish activities
B. REQUIRED participation in St. Brendan Parent Service program
1) Financial support of the school by payment of fees and tuition
2) Attendance at two parent meetings sponsored by the principal

Before long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads in the streets of New Orleans--purple, gold, and green. A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are derived from the gifts of the Magi. Gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for one who comes to die.  Centuries ago, today's feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christ's identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunately the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent, and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord and to Christ's coming again in glory. IF NOT NOW, WHEN?
At the beginning of Advent we heard the words of John the Baptist, proclaiming the promised Messiah. Now, at the end of the Christmas season, he appears again in the Gospel story. John was a surprising person. He had taken on the dress and role of a prophet, wandering the desert surviving on locusts and wild honey. He drew large crowds, declaring to them that it was not enough to be born Jewish; everyone--men and women, rich and poor, tax collectors and prostitutes--needed to repent and be washed clean. When he baptized Jesus (Mark 1:7-11), the appearance of the Holy Spirit was not of John's doing and showed who Jesus really is. It marked the new reality that Jesus brings. To go into the waters of baptism is a symbol of death and rebirth to a new life, while the baptism of the Holy Spirit gives an inner spiritual power to live as a child of God. After Jesus' death and resurrection the apostles continued to baptize new believers in water, and laid hands on them to confer the Holy Spirit. For many of us, baptism and confirmation occurred when we were too young to realize their true meaning. Think about it now! God has given us grace and power to live as God's own sons and daughters, with the hope of eternal life. But we can't just sit back. The life of grace we are called to requires effort, persistence, sacrifice, and selflessness. The enemy of the life of faith, which constantly lurks in the background, is not unbelief but apathy. We get tired of trying, we want to take it easy, we fall prey to the idea that someone else can do it. But a life with Christ says if not now, when? If not you, who else?

This feast has had several names through history, most recently the feast of the Circumcision and then the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. The Church finally settled on a more ancient title, Mary, the Holy Mother of God. It also has the secondary title of the Octave of Christmas, the secular title of New Year’s Day, and an honorary title of World Day of Prayer for Peace. Strangely, the title that is most confusing to non-Catholics is the official one.  When we call Mary the Mother of God, we are not saying that she somehow preceded God or is equal to God. We are simply recognizing that her human son, Jesus, is also the divine Son of God. We honor Mary because God honored her by choosing her to be the mother of Jesus. In her humble response of “Let it be done to me,” she agreed to be part of God’s plan for our salvation. And so today’s Gospel records one simple action of Mary: she kept these things in her heart.  Even in this simple sentence we are given a good example of discipleship. Like Mary, we must both keep, or remember, what God has done, and reflect on what we remember. First, how much do we remember about what God has done for us? How well do we know the stories of salvation found in the scriptures? How well do we know God’s actions in church history? And how much do we remember of the personal graces God has given us? Do we recall the prayers God has answered, the guidance given, the love of God that others have shown us, the times God has forgiven us?  Second, how much do we reflect on what God has done? Even if we have many memories of God’s goodness to us, we also need to pray over them and ask ourselves how we have changed because of what God has done. Am I more generous to others? Do I forgive hurts more readily? Do I share my faith with my family or friends? Do I support my parish with my time or offerings? Let us ask God’s help to imitate Mary by remembering and reflecting.
