Today’s Second Collection: May 19th & 20th
Cardinal McIntyre Fund for CharityWe walked together in harmony in the house of God
(Psalm 55: 14).Here’s Hope since 1951 for those in crisis situations throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Your contribution goes directly toward emergency needs for children, adults, and families in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties. You are their hope! Your gift provides a one-time emergency help for Food, Utilities, Transportation, Medical, Housing or Funeral Expenses. Your contributions to the Cardinal McIntyre Fund for Charity make you a sharer in our parishes' works of mercy, and in their rewards of grace. You are helping to serve “the neediest of those in need” — children, families and individuals throughout the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles for whom no other resources exist. 100% of your tax deductible contribution goes directly toward helping the poorest of the poor. The Fund is not a replacement or supplement for welfare or other forms of public assistance. It does not support persons’ living needs on a continuing basis. Rather the Fund acts to solve immediate, pressing problems. Food and milk for three days. Lodging for the night. Emergency medical care. Rent to tide over a financial crisis. A utility bill to keep the water or heat turned on for the week.

Continue reading "Week of May 20, 2012 The Ascension of the Lord"

FULFILLMENTIt is interesting that during the Easter season, when we do not hear a reading from the Old Testament,it becomes so important. This is particularly true today. Peter's speech begins with a prayer formula familiar to Jews: "The God of Abraham . . ." (Acts 3:13). It likewise contains the potent phrases "Holy and Righteous One" and "mouth of all the prophets" (3:14, 18). Peter was stating in no uncertain terms that the law, psalms, and prophets had been fulfilled in Christ. This is reinforced by Jesus himself in the Gospel passage, when he states that everything in the scriptures (to the early Christians "the scriptures" were what we call the Old Testament) had to be fulfilled. Above all, Jesus and Peter both emphasize that we are witnesses to all of this, and are sent forth to bear witness to it in the world. The Latin Missa, from which our word "Mass" comes, means "sent" (as in "mission"). As we leave Mass today, let us remember to be witnesses to all that has been fulfilled in the Risen Christ.
Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

The season of First Communions is here, and invitations pour in as the new communicants, mostly seven years old, gather extended families for their first reception of the Eucharist. Many years ago, Communion was not for children at all. Twelve to fourteen was the typical time for Roman Catholics to receive for the first time, and in those days this was a transition into the adult world of work and marriage. The custom did not begin to shift to childhood until reforms set in place by Pope St. Pius X began to take hold in the 1920s. If you are going to a First Communion, you can give thanks that the table of the Lord is today open so much more lavishly than before.
--James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Continue reading "Week of April 22, 2012 Third Sunday of Easter"

The desire to be able to prove the existence of a divinity has troubled humanity since human consciousness first became aware of the divine. To this very day we are fond of saying that any number of things--from sunsets to hot fudge sundaes--are "proof that there is a God." We get so caught up in the story of "doubting Thomas" that we fail to notice that today's Gospel gives us John's account of Pentecost, the bestowing of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples following the Resurrection. Thomas, evidently, missed out not only on seeing the Risen Christ, but receiving the Holy Spirit as well. This is not to be taken lightly and, perhaps, makes Thomas' disbelief a bit easier to comprehend. It also makes his professing that Jesus is his Lord and God--the only time the New Testament explicitly refers to Jesus Christ as "God"--more remarkable.
Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Today was once called in Latin "Dominica in albis," or "Sunday in White," because the church was full of newly baptized Christians wearing their white baptismal garments. Another old title, best forgotten, is "Low Sunday." There's nothing low about this festive Sunday in Easter, the eighth day since the first "Alleluia" rang out. In Christian tradition, the number eight is a symbol of fulfillment, transition, breaking through the seven-day rhythm of life to a new way of being. That is why many baptismal fonts have eight sides. The greatest feasts of our calendar are always extended for eight days, called an "octave." In a way, this means that this first week of Easter is really considered to be one great day. This octave day of Easter sees the best features of Easter still vibrant: joyful alleluias, lush spring flowers everywhere, sprinkling with water, and a lavish table where the Lord gives us himself as bread and wine. For Orthodox Christians, today is the Easter feast, since their tradition requires that the Christian Passover cannot begin until the days of the Jewish Passover are ended.
--James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK
God of everlasting mercy,
who in the very recurrence of the paschal feast
kindle the faith of the people you have made your own,
increase, we pray, the grace you have bestowed,
that all may grasp and rightly understand
in what font they have been washed,
by whose Spirit they have been reborn,
by whose Blood they have been redeemed.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Reflection Question
How can I come to grasp more fully the meaning of my baptism?

Continue reading "Week of April 15, 2012 Divine Mercy Sunday, Second Sunday of Easter"

Family time? Catching up with friends? The dreaded household chores? The weekend is a time to relax, regroup and recharge as you prepare to tackle the week ahead. One perfect way to kick off the weekend is to spend it with the St. Brendan’s Sunshine Ministry. We’re a group of folks with busy lives who manage to carve out some time to feed the homeless of the Hollywood community. How much time? We meet every Saturday at 10:15 at the Blessed Sacrament Social Center (6636 Selma Avenue) to serve a warm meal with a prayer and plenty of smiles. We’re finished by 11:15. One hour! The cost commitment? About what you’d spend on going out to one lunch could serve over 150 plates! One lunch! The benefit? You can’t go wrong sharing your blessings! To get in on all the fun contact Joan Curtin jcurtin@morganlewis.com to be put on the Sunshine email list. It doesn’t have to be every week and it
doesn’t have to be gourmet cooking but it might just be the highlight of your week!

Did you know that in addition to scheduling a mass intention or picking up a mass card for your ill or homebound loved one and/or friend, you can also schedule our parish nurse to visit them free-of-charge? The Parish Nurse is available to visit seniors or the ill in their homes Tuesdays& Fridays 9:am- 2:30pm. In addition to checking on them physically, they will also provide communion. To make an appointment please call 323-938-8036 or email parishnurseom@yahoo.com. Sponsored by the Order of Malta

Christian Meditation Group Thursday Nights 7:30-8:30pm at St. John of God Retirement Center.
