Believe what you read, preach what you believe, practice what you preach. — The bishop to the new deacon as he hands him the Book of Gospels during the ordination liturgy

About the Deacon

Having a deacon is a relatively new thing for St. Brendan, and each year more parishes get their first deacon. So we thought it would be helpful to offer a section on the deacon for all those who are still wondering "What is a deacon?"

In this section we've provided some background on the ministry of the deacon, which was an ancient church ministry restored by order of the Second Vatican Council. From the options at the top you can explore and learn maybe more than you need to about the deacon!

A note on titles: although Eastern Christians often call their deacons "Father," we don't do that in the Roman tradition. In this archdiocese, the prefered way of addressing a deacon is simply "Deacon."

Deacon Eric is a professional Web developer. That's how he eats and pays the rent, since deacons typically do not receive a salary from the Church. So he is also our parish webmaster in addition to being in charge of St. Brendan's social justice and outreach ministries. If you have any questions about this site, or anything else he can help you with, please don't hesitate to shoot him an email at deacon.eric@stbrendanchurch.org.
