Readings for the Order of Christian Funerals
If you are planning a funeral, or have been asked to do a reading for a funeral, this resource is for you. This section will help you choose a reading or to read and reflect upon a chosen reading before you proclaim it at the funeral.
These scriptural readings are from options for the Order of Christian Funerals as contained in The Lectionary for Mass. These readings may be used at the funeral vigil, the funeral Mass or the committal rite. The readings are those used in all Roman Catholic churches in the United States.
If you have been asked to proclaim a reading at one of the services that constitute the funeral rite—the vigil, the Mass or Word service, or the committal—your reading is a vital part of the process of grieving and consolation for all the assembly. Please take time to review your reading carefully, thoughtfully and prayerfully.
At the Mass, there are usually three readings. The first is from the Hebrew Testament, the second from the New Testament (Letters, Acts or Revelation), and the third is the Gospel, proclaimed by the deacon, or if no deacon is present, the presiding priest. There is also a reading from the Book of Psalms, called the responsorial psalm, which your bereavement minister can help you select.
The time of death is one where you deserve not only the consolation of your immediate family and friends, but also the Christian community and the Word of God. We hope these readings nourish you in your time of grief.
