I realize that I am not used to the idea of God throwing a big party. —Henri J. M. Nouwen

Liturgical Ministries

Following the Second Vatican Council, the ancient liturgical ministries of the Church were restored to the laity. Among these are altar servers, lectors, ministers of communion, sacristans, greeters and ushers, musicians, cantors and those who decorate our worship space. On any given weekend at St. Brendan, up to 100 people may be involved in serving the assembly through lturgical ministry.

We are proud of the extensive involvement of the people of St. Brendan in the liturgy. As the "source and summit" of our Christian life, our liturgies serve as a focal point each week for nearly 2,400 households, nourishing them to live the Christian life throughout the week.

We invite you to consider becoming involved in liturgical ministry here at St. Brendan.

Altar servers

Young people of the parish, both boys and girls, are invited to serve the community as altar servers. Wearing the white alb of baptism, altar servers fulfill the duties of those who assist the priest and deacon at mass. Students at St. Brendan School may inquire there about serving; others may inquire at the parish office. Training is required. Coordinator: Dulce Febre.

Lectors

To the lector belongs the ministry of proclaiming the scripture at the liturgy. Through previous reading, reflection and preparation, the lector serves the assembly not merely by reading from a text, but by providing an effective proclamation that is patently well prepared. Lectors must be fully-initated Roman Catholics (baptized, confirmed and received their First Communion). Training is required. Coordinator: Bob Lass.

Ministers of Communion

Those who administer to the assembly the Body and Bloof of Christ perform a special ministry, for the purpose of the Eucharist is that we eat and drink. Lectors must be fully-initated Roman Catholics (baptized, confirmed and received their First Communion). Training is required. Coordinator: Dulce Febre.

Ministers of Communion to the homebound each week take the Body and Blood of Christ to the homes, hospitals and hospices of our community, bringing to those who are unable to attend the Sunday celebration the prayers and blessings of the faith community. Coordinator: Toni Hodgkiss.

Greeters and Ushers

As the people arrive at the church, greeters and ushers welcome them in the name of the assembly, help them to be seated, take up collections, direct the communion procession and provide other assistance as needed to the assembly. Coordinator: Rita Bazely.

Musicians and Cantors

The St. Brendan music program is widely considered one of the best in the Archdiocese. Under the guidance of the music director, Chris de Silva, an array of musical styles is provided to fit the needs of five different services each week as well as the demanding preparations for major feasts and seasons of the liturgical year. From organ music to a contemporary ensemble, with choirs ranging from trained musicians and instrumentalists to the children's choir, there are opportunities for members to participate according to their skills. Learn more in the music section.

Worship Environment

St. Brendan Church is blessed to have many dedicated parishioners who see to the adornment of the worship space through flowers and seasonal decor to enhance the assembly's worship experience. Coordinator: Joe Galvin.
